Radio Commons is a platform for sonic interventions that seeks to practice solidarity by building collective agency. Co-authored by a remote collective of artists and cultural workers, the project is an experiment in commoning at a distance, conceived during the lockdowns of 2020 at the invitation of Relais Culture Europe, and re-imagined as Radio Commons: A Sonic Archipelago via a series of experiments in collectivism during the course of 2022. The islands that make up the archipelago are temporary assemblies of beings and ideas. The archipelago challenges insularity. Many of the islands are ‘terra incognita’: not yet populated, awaiting curiosity, inviting collaboration.
‘Tarkib: Footstep Frequencies’ is an experiment of connection. Tarkib is a Baghdad-based independent art collective, and together we have embarked on a creative process of deep listening, displacing our thoughts and bodies, searching for proximity and distance through walking. These raw and unedited recordings made by Radio Commons’ Marta Belligreri and Tarkib’s Zaid Saad come from this exchange of sonic environments.
