Bob and Mary are expecting. As this is their first child, Bob considers if he's even going to be in the room when Mary gives birth due to nerves and a multitude of emotions. As he goes through these reflections, he writes it all down and tucks it away in a journal. Decades later and after his death, Bob's granddaughter, Kellyn, finds this journal entry and decides to make a "sound poem" about her grandfather's emotions and the birth of her father, transcending years of family history and memory. Kellyn narrates this journal entry from the perspective of her grandfather and produces this sound poem, including her own field recordings, foley, and editing.

In The Dark What’s New: We Were Being Taught a Lesson

Shivangi Mariam (IN 2021)

8 min

Shivangi Mariam is a writer, independent researcher, and translator from India. The piece is about the function of memory in the face of mass violence.

The poem was written in response to a massacre that happened in Shivangi’s home city Delhi in 2020, a massacre where the victims continue to await justice. This is their first time matching their poetry to sound design. To do this, they collaborated with Osloob, a Palestinian rapper, singer, and music producer. For Osloob this is an experiment in style too, because he had never created sound design for spoken word.

Audio Walks for Armchair Listening Mini Series

If a bird could write a poem maybe it would sound like this?

This is the sound poem for No Birds Land, an art and sound installation in the Trinity Tunnel on the Edinburgh cycle path network.
Before and after entering the tunnel, the air is full of birdsong; inside there is little or none. This sound-art installation recognises that no birds land or alight there (although occasionally one flies through), that it is a sort of 'No Man's Land' for birds, though humans built the sandstone structure to transport goods and each other between Granton Harbour and the rest of the city.
