In The Dark What’s New: Bedstuy Beats

Vivienne Schutz (DE 2023)

Vivienne Schutz (DE 2023)

1 min

Vivien Schütz is a German radio maker living in Brooklyn, New York. She typically produces radio documentaries and fictional stories for German public radio, but this was her first time experimenting with something non-narrated piece using only field recordings.

The piece was inspired by the prompt "What does your neighborhood sound like to you?". It’s called “Bedstuy Beats”. Bedstuy is short for Bedford-Stuyvesant, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, where Vivien has been living for the last two years. A lot of the recordings were spontaneous — she just grabbed her phone when something interesting was happening around her.

This series of short audio portraits from Chicago draws from the long lineage of oral history recording in the city, perhaps inspired by the likes of Studs Terkel and the assumption that everyone has a story if you just ask.

XMTR Radio Hour Ep23 : Sea Change

Social Broadcasts (UK 2023)

Produced by Social Broadcasts (UK 2023)

60 min / Episode 23 of 23

This Transmitter Radio hour is dedicated to a series of 'Audio Postcards' produced by Lucia Scazzocchio (Social Broadcasts) to accompany Sea Change part of At the Docks 2023, a new summer season of arts culture and events at the Royal Docks in East London. Curated by Invisible Dust, Sea Change brings artists together with leading academics and University College London inspired by research into sustainable responses to the climate emergency.

‘Sea Change’ is a term used for a substantial shift in situation or perspective and was first used in Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’, a play with a background, like the Royal Docks, of sea voyages, developing globalisation and colonialism. Sea Change points to the future, to the need for changing practices, but also alludes to a pivot point of the climate crisis in the dock’s history – the move from sail to steam power. This development led to an enormous expansion in London’s trade and exchange of goods and peoples, which enabled modern day industrialisation, globalisation and with it the problems of climate change.

Artists Dana Olărescu, Raqs Media Collective, Melanie Manchot and Simon Faithfull give a unique insight into their commissions at the Royal Docks between 11-29th May.

The Last Bohemians LA: Gloria Hendry

Kate Hutchinson (UK 2022)

Kate Hutchinson (UK 2022)

32min Episode 2 of 8

The Last Bohemians meets maverick and radical women in arts and culture and takes listeners on a vivid, hallucinatory trip through their extraordinary lives. From subversive musicians and style icons to game-changing artists, these are women who have lived life on the edge and who still refuse to play by the rules.

Lost and feeling adrift during the pandemic, host and creator Kate Hutchinson decamped from London to Hollywood in search of the wildest women in the City of Angels to help her get her mojo back. From Sunset Strip sexpots to Downtown artists, she meets a range of incredible women – and one artistic dynasty! – among the palm trees and bougainvillaea to glean some much-needed advice.

In this episode we meet Gloria Hendry. She made film history with Live and Let Die, becoming Bond's first Black love interest, and took on edgy roles in what were known as the blaxploitation films of the 1970s. She talks about being a trailblazer, raunchy sex scenes, what being a Playboy Bunny taught her about life and how she paved the way for Black women in film.

Her voice is infectious and she describes in her down to earth way how she navigated Black civil rights, feminism, being part of ‘Black Renaissance’ movies and how to navigate being a woman of colour in the entertainment business. Her motto ‘it doesn’t matter what you think of me, I can’t do anything about it’
